Dr. Sonnie Hereford III – Words of Wisdom

Today, 16 December 2014, was a day of historic significance in Huntsville, as we gathered together to recognize civil rights leader and hero Dr. Sonnie Hereford III at the groundbreaking ceremony for Sonnie Hereford Elementary School.

In September 1963, Dr. Hereford enrolled his son, Sonnie Hereford IV, in the former Fifth Avenue Elementary School in Huntsville, Alabama. As the first black student to enroll in an all-white school, Hereford’s son became the catalyst for integration in Alabama.

A defining moment in my life, Dr. Hereford’s words of truth brought me to tears. “You have to stand up for what is right, or you are dead anyway,” he stated. We write our history by taking action and staying involved. Thank you to the Hereford family for your courage, for setting an example, and for leaving a legacy that will be remembered by generations.

Each year, children from the Heart of the Valley YMCA Downtown Child Development Center are blessed with Christmas toys delivered to their classrooms by Santa Claus himself!

The Heart of the Valley YMCA Board of Directors and staff would like to thank the Huntsville Margarita Society, Junior League of Huntsville, and the many Y volunteers who helped create precious memories for our organization’s children.

Today’s words ring, quite simply, truth.

Today’s words ring, quite simply, truth. Abraham Lincoln stated, “No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.” God knows, and He has the power and authority to reveal to any one, any time.

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:13)
