In September 1963, Dr. Hereford enrolled his son, Sonnie Hereford IV, in the former Fifth Avenue Elementary School in Huntsville, Alabama. As the first black student to enroll in an all-white school, Hereford’s son became the catalyst for integration in Alabama.
A defining moment in my life, Dr. Hereford’s words of truth brought me to tears. “You have to stand up for what is right, or you are dead anyway,” he stated. We write our history by taking action and staying involved. Thank you to the Hereford family for your courage, for setting an example, and for leaving a legacy that will be remembered by generations.
